This is the third report describing the archaeological investigations at the Range site (11S47). The first report covers the Archaic through Late Woodland occupations, the second report describes the Emergent Mississippian Dohack and Range phase occupations, and the fourth report describes the Emergent Mississippian George Reeves and Lindeman phase occupations.Investigation of the Range site represents on of the many archaeological projects conducted by the University of Illinois in cooperation with IDOT within the FAI-270 (redesignated 255) right-of-way from 1977 through 1985. Over 5,500 prehistoric features were excavated at the Range site, including hundreds of house (structure) foundations, thousands of pit features, and, consequently, entire prehistoric communities.
